No Covid, Yes Influenza

While the Coronavirus pandemic has started to die down, another common infectious disease is starting to spread throughout the world. Influenza, often known as common flu, is always present during the summer and winter seasons. Influenza A and B are respiratory illnesses caused by the influenza virus.  Influenza B only affects humans, while influenza A can affect both humans and animals. Symptoms of both types of this infectious disease include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, and fatigue. Influenza B typically affects children more often than adults and generally causes stronger symptoms than influenza C.

Most people are able to manage flu symptoms at home and recover within a few days to a week. However, those who are at high risk for flu complications should seek medical treatment immediately. High-risk groups include children under 5 years old, adults 65 years old and up, women who are pregnant or up to two weeks postpartum, and people with underlying health conditions.

Several over-the-counter medications can help ease the symptoms of influenza, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, to combat fever, headache, or achiness. Antiviral medications can also be prescribed by a doctor to shorten the duration of the illness and prevent serious complications. It is important to note that antiviral medications work best when started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Prevention is key to avoiding the spread of influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends getting vaccinated every year as the best way to avoid getting sick with the flu. Other preventive measures include washing hands frequently, avoiding close contact with sick people, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and staying home when feeling sick.
